Sometimes computers are SOOOOO frustrating...as if you didn't know. A few minutes ago I wanted to download some free software (Adobe Acrobat Reader) to get more information for this column, and when I checked the specifications it was only for Windows 95 and Windows NT. I'm perfectly happy with Windows 3.1 and I hate this idea that I'm being forced into Windows 95. So I'll just do without the information I wanted.

Now back to business. We had very positive comments from some of the membership about the program on investing, so I thought I would add a few addresses that I've tried out. Some are really interesting, and some are enh! but worth a look anyway. These were all in the June issue of SmartMoney so if you want more information, pick up an issue.

For stock quotes and market news, try:
http://quote.yahoo.com
http://www.pcquote.com
http://www.stockmaster.com
http://www.merc.com

I tried the Yahoo! site and it seems to be about the best of them all, but I wanted to try their chat area and wound up downloading something called ichat, which wouldn't work until I downloaded a new version of Netscape Navigator. Who said life was simple?

For portfolio tracking I tried http://investor.msn.com

I liked that for being able to set up a hypothetical portfolio and following its progress. Also listed were:
http://newsalert.com
http://irnet.com (Investors Edge)

If you're interested in company earnings and research, try:
http://dailystocks.com
http://researchmag.com
http://insidertrader.com
http://www.hoovers.com

A couple of these require a membership so I didn't pursue them. This was supposed to be all freebie information.

When I tried:
http://www.sec.gov/edgarhp.htm

I even found a place to put your name on a list for notices of government auctions. And there is also:
http:/edgar.stern.nyu.edu/EDGAR.html

For mutual funds, there is:
http://www.morningstar.net

For Emerging markets:
http://www.ifc.org

Fixed income:
http://www.bonds-online.com

Taxes:
http://www.1040.com

And finally for U.S Economic data:
http://www.webcom.com/~yardeni

This is the one that looked so good but I needed the extra software mentioned above. Those who have the specifications might find this very interesting.
