Last spring, while browsing a book store in Branson I found a book entitled "Linus Torvalds-Just For Fun", a biography by David Diamond, published by HarperCollins Publishers Inc. in 2001. It recounts the life of Torvalds from his first encounter with a Vic-20 at age 11 to his moving to the California to work for Transmeta as a programmer.
I found the story about why he developed the kernel and his desire to keep it open source interesting, but until our last meeting I did not have the motivation to try it myself. At this time I have not installed it on a computer, but I have found some very informative websites where anyone who is interested can gain a lot of information about Linux in its different variations as follows:
http://www.linux.org/ is probably the site of choice as it has online lessons
http://www.linux.org/lessons/ to teach a new user how to get started and run Linux.
http://www.linux.org/dist/ helps locate sources for Linux software and books.
Another helpful site is http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ for the most current information on Linux and also has an online forum for questions (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/forum/).
