So you're still using Windows98SE? Are you both irritated and frustrated by the worthless Network Neighborhood icon which you have never used?

Google "Network Neighborhood" or "Hide Network Neighborhood" and you'll be rewarded by a recipe for a fix. A little surgery deep in the bowels of the registry puts the icon into solitary confinement forever. Here are the steps.

Click on Start and then Run. Now type in "regedit" (sans quote marks) and press enter. Click as needed to follow this path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer and on the right side expect to see:

    Defaultvalue not set
    CDRAutoRun95 00 00 00
    NoDriveTypeAuto...ff 00 00 00

Highlight the "NoDriveTypeAuto" and rename it as "NoNetHood" (no quotes). Now use Modify to enter the value "00 00 00 01" (no quotes).

Exit regedit and your surgery is set in place. Re-boot and the subsequent disappearance of Network Neighborhood from your desktop will show your operation to have been a success. If you care to go back along the same path you'll see your handiwork in place and Windows will have restored the NoDriveTypeAuto... ff 00 00 00 line.

BE ADVISED THAT THIS SURGERY IS UNSAFE IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A BACKUP COPY OF YOUR WINDOWS PARTITION!
